Community
My community experience was by far the most diverse - spanning a national project and multiple sites across Ohio, Colorado and New Mexico. My most expansive project focused on phenylketonuria (PKU) care. I co-authored a presentation and co-facilitated a panel discussion at the National PKU conference. That project was extended to a PKU community website designed to provide care map resources. In Ohio, I worked with a Registered Dietitian private practice, Clem & Thyme to learn more about individual adult care, and the business side of owning a private practice. Last, after returning home to Colorado, I provided general food education in a rural community.

The Value of Precepting
Continuously seeking opportunities to be a preceptor will be a cornerstone of my new career as a credentialed RDN. The benefits of precepting other students are tremendous, and it is something I personally look forward to in my future. Students bring fresh perspective and ideas; and equally important they reflect the latest scientific practices in the constantly evolving field of nutrition science. Precepting students requires mentoring and leadership skills and the process of teaching someone, reinforces concepts and cements knowledge. My favorite students are those that ask hard questions, and can benefit from my lessons learned and challenges. I’m thankful for my preceptors who exhibited immense depth of knowledge and specialty skills, but also were patient and willing to take the time to adapt to my learning style. My goal is to do the same for the next generation of RDNs.
PKU Adult Care Community

Adult Mentor
The opportunity to bring a positive and uplifting message to a community of people living with a chronic disease was remarkable. Our panel team, multi-media presentation and audience engagement created exiting new dialog at the conference.
PKU Adult Care Map Project
Filling a critical need in the Adult PKU community was very rewarding. My hope is that this project lives on, and becomes a permanent resource for a community that is valuable to clinics.

Public Policy Letter: Patient Advocate
Patient advocacy can be lifelong journey. To write this letter, I pulled up a picture from 10 years ago when we visited Sen Bennett’s office in person to advocate for the same legislation – Mandate Insurance Coverage of Medical Formula. Hopefully one day the political climate will change and enable this critical legislation to finally pass.
Vegetarian Meal Handout
Researching vegetarian, diabetes friendly menu options was an adventure in reading websites and testing recipes. This project can be a great starting point to helping clients in the future.
